Got Social?

Digital Community and Friendship

I am readeing “The Young and The Digital: What the Migration to Social-Networked Sites, Games, and Anytimes, Anywhere Media Means for Our Future” by S. Cragi Watkins.  So far I am really enjoying the book and look foward to blogging about it.  Probably tomorrow.

So, here is a question from the book I want you to consider:

“Are notions of community and friendship changing in the digital age?”

What do you think?

  • Gregg Festa says:

AJ. I see social networks especially FB as a digital version of the old city stoops where people congregate with other people they know to share news, life stories or to coordinate plans for various events. I see microblogging tools like twitter or even texting equivalent to passing notes in school for much of the same purposes as above. So to answer your question, in current form, I think the digital tools are only extensions to our traditional community and friendship. That said, I think SL and Augmented Realty may have a more transformational impact on how we interact moving forward.
